In a stunning upset, Democrat Doug Jones was declared the winner over Republican Roy Moore in the Alabama Senate race.  Alabama, among the most Republican states in the country, elected its only state wide Democratic office-holder.  Jones clearly benefitted from Roy Moore’s questionable past.  Well known to Alabama voters, Moore was kicked off the state Supreme Court twice for refusing to follow the law.  Last month, credible allegations surfaced alleging that Moore engaged in sexual misconduct with several young women including with an underage girl.  While many Evangelical voters stuck by Moore, enough Republican voters stayed home or voted for Jones.  President Trump, Steve Bannon, and others campaigned strongly for Moore.  Apparently, Alabama voters were less concerned with President Trump, with a slight majority indicating unfavorable opinions of his performance in office.  However, a majority indicated a preference for Republican control of the Senate.  Unfortunately, we also saw signs of voter suppression efforts wherein heavily Black precincts were understaffed resulting in very long lines intended to dissuade voters.  Although they did not alter the result, these efforts are not limited to Alabama.  This is a stain on our democracy and we need to demand better as a nation.   More coverage on The Booth!
