Episode 87 – Wild Hearts Horses for Heroes 2018

Horses. Beautiful, majestic, peaceful creatures that most people do not know can help Veterans with PTSD. I talked to Julie Lovely last year, check out Episode 52 here – (Oscar Mike Radio Episode 52).

I met Julie on her farm and set up to begin talking with her. Note to self: Make sure I have headphones whenever I go remote. Snow had made scheduling challenging:)

We were in her barn, and to me this is the best part of doing this episode. Here we are sitting in a barn, outside on a cool spring day talking about what Julie is doing with Wild Hearts Horses for Heroes in 2018.

There is a lot coming up this year. First there is the Wild Hearts Horses for Heroes 2018 Benefit Dinner on April 21st at the Easton, MA Country Club. This benefit dinner and silent auction is to raise funds that Wild Hearts will use to provide equestrian therapy classes to Veterans.

2018 marks the first year that there will be two sessions for the Veterans. There is the Spring Healing through Horsemanship Veterans Program. Based on the need, Julie decided to have a fall session.  Her program is growing, and I am happy that Veterans find this valuable.

Talking with Julie, I could see the excitement in her eyes as she was talking about working with Veterans. Even with all the work required to get the paddocks, barn, and training area ready all while preparing for the benefit diner, there was this undercurrent of energy that is contagious. I  can’t wait to come back and talk with her and the whole crew this summer.  I can’t say this enough, people who serve in this way deserve our support.

Episode 52: Wild Hearts – Horses for Heros

Tribute to Marines and Sailor killed in KC-130 Crash

I started this week’s episode with a tribute to the Marines and Sailor that were killed Monday, July 10th in Mississippi. This is still being investigated; however, I wanted to take this time and offer thoughts and prayers to the families who lost their loved ones in this horrific crash.

The Word

I found out about Wild Hearts Horses for Heroes earlier this year when I was guest hosting at WVBF AM 1530 for South Shore New and Views. Julie Crossman-Lovely started this Equestrian Therapy Program a couple of years ago and invited me to come out to see the program working.
I was taken with how the horse paid attention to everything the Veterans was doing. A shoulder dropping, or an arm moved the wrong way could mean the horse would not move as intended.
Julie was authoritative but calm. I could see both Veterans respond well when she was giving instruction.
Afterwards, we all sat together and talked and it was great hearing how much the horses helped these Veterans keep living again.
Wild Hearts – Horses for Heroes is completely funded by donations. You can check out their website —-> Wild Hearts – Horses for Heroes Website to find out more. You can purchase tickets for a $2000.00 travel voucher from Susan Peavey Travel. Travel Raffle Courtesy of Susan Peavy Travel.
I am looking forward to visiting again and talking other Veterans about their journey. Thanks Julie

This is a team effort

What’s next?

I am still focusing on people who advocate for Veterans. I also like doing podcasts where Veterans are using what they have to open a business, non-profit, or just using what they have to make someone’s life better. Thanks for listening, I can’t wait for this time next year.

Question of the Week

How do I feel about Memorial Day?

I know some military and veterans get frustrated that more emphasis isn’t placed on the why of Memorial Day. I do Memorial Day by having a cigar and thinking about those who paid the ultimate price for what I have in my life. All I ask anyone is while you are enjoying your beer, brats and scenery, just take a moment to think about why you can enjoy all this. A high price has been paid for us to enjoy these times.

The Word

I have been following the story of Huey. Huey was a two year old PitBull that was killed by Army Veteran Marinna Rollins on or around April 17th. I had originally called this episode In Memory of Camboui, but someone on Facebook sent me the following link

Facebook Post from Justice for Huey

I think this tells the story better than I could, and certainly better than any newspaper. I started talking to Mason from Justice for Huey. Click here for the group’s Facebook Page —> Justice for Huey

Huey moments his death

Mason filled in some of the blanks I had, and started talking about Shelter to Soldier, a nonprofit that helped him through his PTSD. I would like to have him come on the show next week to talk about his experience and what Justice for Huey is doing. I wanted this episode to be a way to say that many people recognize the good that animals can do for Veterans with PTSD. I also wanted to state that there are Veterans who would be alive if they could have had access to a dog like Huey.

I asked people on Facebook about PitBulls and service to people. I just want to say thanks for everyone who reached out to tell me about their experiences with PitBulls, service animals, and PTSD. I also wanted to say thanks to Autumn Blake from the Fayetteville Animal Protection Society for taking the time to talk about Huey. There is a need for animals like Huey in people’s lives. I can’t speak to his killer’s actions. I have not watched the video of Huey being killed. I don’t think I ever will. Mason tells this story in a heartfelt, authentic way. He is looking at coming on for Episode 43 and I have committed to raising awareness for the work he and Justice for Huey is doing. More to follow on this.

The Complaint Department

They have a problem with all the people military or otherwise who expect something for nothing. POG & GRUNT are tired of hearing about people who want to be handed everything. I see their point. I also know there are amazing people out there.
