172 – Video Game Nursing

I was reading the Boston Herald the other day and came across this article about a VA Nurse who was playing video games on her phone while a soldier died. The article also gave detail on a VA nurse in the same facility who was diverting morphine. Not a good day for Veterans.

Really appreciated JJ coming on to add perspective and context around this issue. I thought video games while nursing was not even a thing. The part that bothered me was the light punishment that these nurses got as a result of their actions. You can read the entire article here — > https://www.bostonherald.com/2019/11/15/va-nurse-who-played-video-games-while-patient-died-gets-one-year-probation/

JJ is a Navy Veteran and has been a patient in the VA system for a while. He was not happy that I had taken a long time to get my stuff updated so it made sense to have him on to talk about VA medical care. As I said in the podcast, this is not VA bashing episode. I cited the 2016 study by John Hopkins that medical errors are a leading cause of death in the U.S. —> https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/study_suggests_medical_errors_now_third_leading_cause_of_death_in_the_us . I asked JJ what can Veterans do to help themselves. JJ stated that Veterans need to take ownership and advocate for their own care. Doing so would allow problems to resolved in early stages. I will be filling out all survey cards going forward! Thanks again JJ, for coming on Oscar Mike Radio.

165 – Jim Tough 600 – 22 for 22 Charlie Mike

Jim Tough has been doing pushups for 600 Days to raise awareness about Veterans Suicide and the harm PTSD does to people. It is more than just pushups though, Jim relays an inspirational message to people who need to hear it. Sometimes these messages are a NCOs proverbial boot in the south end but they are from the heart. I have learned a lot from listening to the messages of the day.

Jim doesn’t do these for the attention. The goal is to get to a point where he doesn’t have to do them at all. The need is real. Please do not use a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Veteran getting a hair cut!

I went to the 2019 Greater Boston Stand Down put on by the New England Center and Home for Veterans. I met some nurses from the Greater VA Medical Center and they started getting me right. Good stuff.

163 – Mark, the Reaper – Get REAPERFIED!

Don’t get clean, Get REAPERFIED!

Talking to Veterans who re-invent themselves never gets old. I met Mark a couple years ago, and he told me about his plan to launch Reaper Detailing and Powerwashing.

Fast forward to the present and Mark has literally become a Reaper against dirt in any form. Mark has a detailing and powerwashing business that is completely mobile. He hit me up about getting my motorcycle REAPERFIED. I said yes, and met him to go through the experience.

Now, I thought I could clean a motorcycle. I really did, but what I can do is nothing compared to what Mark did in 84 minutes. He showed me I was a rookie at best. I could use the chrome to shave with no problem. I asked Mark how he got started with detailing. He told me that he liked cleaning, and got a couple of supplies to start. Now, he is looking to grow his business and hopes to make it where Veterans can join him to be successful.

People ask me all the time if there are Veterans who have used what they learned in the service to make something different with their life. Mark, The Reaper, is a perfect example of someone starting small and working to fulfill his goals no matter the challenge or the weather. Don’t get clean, get the Reaper!
