Episode 68 – South Shore News & Views

Episode 68 – South Shore News & Views

Jack (L) and Brian (R) talking about Veterans

November 8th, I was invited to come on the radio show South Shore News and Views on WVBF AM 1530 in Taunton, MA. SSN&V is hosted by Jack White, Bob Wisgirda, and Murray Vetstein. They had me on last year to do Oscar Mike Radio “Live” and it was an honor to be invited to come back on the show.

Joining me this was U.S. Navy Veteran Brian Hoffman. Brian served during the Vietnam war and had lived the post Vietnam experience. Currently is the Director for Corporate Relations for the The Children’s Museum in Easton (The Childrens Museum in Easton). It is always a pleasure to get to talk with another Veteran. Murray served in the U.S. Navy as well so this Marine felt right at home.

I learn a lot listening to older Veterans. Especially Vietnam Veterans who had a much different homecoming experience than Veterans do now. I feel it is important to get that perspective. Brian and Murray shared their views on the draft which were like mine.

Teamsters Local 653

Brian Hoffman had Brian McElhinney, Principal Office for Teamsters Local 653, (Teamsters Local 653 Website) call into to the show. We talked about how the Teamsters support Veterans hiring and other community outreach projects. So many times Unions seem to get nothing but negative press, so it was good to hear that a Veteran in Massachusetts could go to the Union after the military to look for work.

Brian Hoffman also thanked Brian McElhinney for the Teamsters support of Toys for Troops and the Children’s Museum in Easton. In both cases Teamsters Local 653 went above and beyond to help out with both efforts. It was good getting to learn about this.

Tim and Legend, Client Eastwood

In the second hour, Tim Montjoy from Operation Teammate called in to talk to us. Operation Teammate provides outings for children of military and first responders who are deployed. This allows Operation Teammate to craft events that provide mentorship opportunities to the children that attend these outings. Tim also talked about how the athletes are moved by the opportunity to show these children what hard work and dedication to education and sport can do for their future. This was my second year doing this with WVBF AM 1530 – South Shore New and Views. I love radio, and getting to be on with Jack, Bob, and Murray is a treat. South Shore News is one of many programs on WVBF AM 1530. You can get the complete list of shows and more information on http://www.hometowntalkradio.com/

See you all next year!

Episode 62 – Mistress Carrie – Veterans Advocate & WAAF Radio DJ

Episode 62 – Mistress Carrie – Veterans Advocate & WAAF Radio DJ

The hurt was going strong with this picture!

I started listening to WAAF and Mistress Carrie when I moved to Boston in 1999. I don’t know a lot of female radio personalities and I always liked her unapologetic, high energy style on the radio. I follow her on facebook and this whole episode started with the picture on the left that came from her Facebook Page. This is a picture of Senator Elizabeth Warren and Mistress Carrie. She captioned that she got to meet Senator Warren and talked about Veterans with her. I then began to read comments and ohhh boy…..

Wow, the amount of hurt feelings was amazing. People threw names, f-Bombs and all kinds of other statements that Mistress Carrie is a TRAITOR.

Mistress Carrie is more than capable of taking care of herself. However, I wanted to have her on to talk about what she is doing for Veterans and how she got started, and the situation with her and Senator Warren.

We started talking about music and her background in radio and then moved into how she got into Veterans Advocacy. As the conversation progressed, I just let her talk because some of her experiences here and in overseas came across as intense personal times in her life. Going overseas and being embedded in these units had an effect on her that made her even more committed to helping our Military and Veterans.

She is always looking for all kinds of ways to advocate for Veterans. Now she serves on the Board of Directors for 22Kill Boston, and you can find her at several Veterans events in the Greater Boston area.

People ask me all the time if they can make a difference, and Mistress Carrie shows all us that we can. No matter if we have or have not served, or what we do in our daily lives, we can effect change wherever we are.

We closed it out talking about living and working in Boston. She summed it up perfectly when it came to Boston sports, “You hate us because you ain’t us!”

I look forward to talking with you again. PDAWG sends

Episode 54 – Burnouts 4 Vets

Episode 54 – Burnouts 4 Vets

Albie’s Car that he will be driving this Saturday!

I got a message on Facebook from a listener about an event Saturday July 29th at 10 AM. He wanted to talk with me about the 4th annual Burnouts 4 Vets that raises money for the Brockton VFW Post 1046.

Tiny asked me to come down to the VFW and talk to them about Burnouts 4 Veterans.

This was started 4 years ago by Albie Robbins and his friend Victor Cimino as a way to legally have fun doing burnouts in parking lots while raising money for a good cause.

Entering into the fourth year, this rare treat is economical, family friendly, local and with free parking all in one place.

I talked with the Post Commander, Jim Doherty who outlined what the Brockton VFW did to support military and veterans in the greater Brockton area. Tiny told me that he felt like family being a part of the VFW and loved helping Veterans and people in Brockton. As for Albie and Victor, these guys could do their own TV show. It was a laugh a minute. I had a great time with these guys and they asked me to come back.

I enjoyed getting to talk to these guys and I hope to see you all there this Saturday.

The event will be held at the Brockton VFW – 283 N Quincy St, Brockton, MA 02302

Start time 10:00 AM – Until the last tire is melted rubber. Find out more at the  – Burnouts4Veterans Facebook Page

Episode 52: Wild Hearts – Horses for Heros

Episode 52: Wild Hearts – Horses for Heros

Tribute to Marines and Sailor killed in KC-130 Crash

I started this week’s episode with a tribute to the Marines and Sailor that were killed Monday, July 10th in Mississippi. This is still being investigated; however, I wanted to take this time and offer thoughts and prayers to the families who lost their loved ones in this horrific crash.

The Word

I found out about Wild Hearts Horses for Heroes earlier this year when I was guest hosting at WVBF AM 1530 for South Shore New and Views. Julie Crossman-Lovely started this Equestrian Therapy Program a couple of years ago and invited me to come out to see the program working.
I was taken with how the horse paid attention to everything the Veterans was doing. A shoulder dropping, or an arm moved the wrong way could mean the horse would not move as intended.
Julie was authoritative but calm. I could see both Veterans respond well when she was giving instruction.
Afterwards, we all sat together and talked and it was great hearing how much the horses helped these Veterans keep living again.
Wild Hearts – Horses for Heroes is completely funded by donations. You can check out their website —-> Wild Hearts – Horses for Heroes Website to find out more. You can purchase tickets for a $2000.00 travel voucher from Susan Peavey Travel. Travel Raffle Courtesy of Susan Peavy Travel.
I am looking forward to visiting again and talking other Veterans about their journey. Thanks Julie

This is a team effort

POG and GRUNT want the B1 unleashed in North Korea…. Now

What’s next?

I am still focusing on people who advocate for Veterans. I also like doing podcasts where Veterans are using what they have to open a business, non-profit, or just using what they have to make someone’s life better. Thanks for listening, I can’t wait for this time next year.

Episode 49 – USS Fitzgerald

Episode 49 – USS Fitzgerald

Question of the Week

I was asked about what one can do to start helping Veterans. There are plenty of places to start locally. Places that need your energy, ideas, and muscle to advocate for Veterans.

The Word

I spent this episode trying to get my head around how to ships in a rather LARGE body of water could collide. I wanted to take a moment and honor the brave sailors who did their job and saved more lives as a result. I want to follow up on this when all the facts are available. Until then, my thoughts and prayers go out to the entire crew of the USS Fitzgerald.
