Episode 77 – Government Shutdown

Episode 77 – Government Shutdown

Episode 77 – Government Shutdown

The U.S. Government shut down over the last weekend. I wanted to learn and talk about what happens to the military when this happens. It is more than simply troops don’t paid. There are real consequences when the government is not paying troops. There is a great Military.com article that goes over the major areas that are impacted by a government shutdown. Military.com – How government shutdown would impact pay & benefits .

NOTE: The following is the article from Military.com, and are not my words. I used this because it summarizes the scope of the issue concisely.

                                                           Troop Pay

Although active duty troops and Guard and Reservists on active duty orders are expected to show-up for work during a shutdown, they will not get paid unless Congress passes a separate piece of legislation to do so. Such a bill was awaiting action from the House and Senate Saturday.

Without that legislation, known as the Pay Our Military Act, troops will receive partial paychecks Feb. 1 only for days worked prior to Jan. 20.

Troops Killed in Action

Newly bereaved family members would not receive the Pentagon’s $100,000 death gratuity during a shutdown or military-funded travel to Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, or elsewhere for the dignified transfer or military funeral or memorial.

VA Disability Pay & GI BIll Benefits

However, during the last shutdown in 2013, VA officials warned that if the closure extended beyond several weeks, disability checks were unlikely to go out to more than 5.1 million veterans.

Military Moves and Travel

Military families about to make a permanent change of station (PCS) move or troops preparing for temporary travel (TDY) have their travel on hold until after the shutdown, according to guidance issued by the Defense Department late Jan. 19.

Those who have already departed on military move orders can complete their move, according to the guidance. Those in the midst of TDY travel should return to their duty station, the guidance states

Medical Care on Base

While military hospitals and on base dental clinics will stay open for emergencies, inpatient care and acute care, all other types of care — including elective procedures and primary-care appointments — will be canceled until the shutdown is lifted.

On-Base Child Care

On-base military child care centers will stay open on a case-by-case basis, depending on whether they are seen as “essential.” Users should contact their specific Child Development Center (CDC) for details.

On-Base Schools

Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools will stay open during a shutdown. However, all extracurricular activities, such as sporting events, will be canceled, the guidance says. On-base schools that are operated by local school districts are not be affected by a shutdown.

Commissaries

Stateside commissaries, however, will close by Tuesday night, officials said, while those outside the U.S. and in some rural locations will remain open since they are considered “essential.” Those include two stores in Guam, a store in Puerto Rico, and commissaries at Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center Bridgeport and Fort Irwin in California; Coast Guard Station Kodiak and Fort Greely in Alaska; and Dugway Proving Ground, Utah.

I think our congressmen forget that games they play involve real Americans, not pawns a chessboard……

Keeping a Promise

So as I said in my podcast, I am wearing the Georgia Bulldogs swag. Jill St. Jacques and Tim Montjoy have been guests and are listeners of the podcast. On Episode 60 – Operation Teammate, Founder Tim Montjoy USAF Ret. predicted that Georgia would play for the National Championship back in September, I made the promise that I would wear the gear if his prediction came true. So here it is, I hope your boys pull it off Tim.

The Word

I read about Peter Mimms last June and thought wow, someone took the prize from the Marine Corps as to who can play hide and seek the best. My thoughts went back to the Marine who survived two days in the ocean after falling or jumping overboard. (Chicago Tribune Article about LCpl Mayo falling overboard).

Seamen Mimms hid on the Missile Cruiser USS Shiloh for a week. The USS Shiloh is about 570 long and 55 feet wide at her widest point. With a crew of about 400, it would seem that finding something, much less a person wouldn’t be that difficult.

Not only did Peter Mimms hide undetected, he did it for a whole week and would have stayed hidden longer if one of fellow crew members did catch him. So I am reading all of this and thinking that this guy is a grade A sh**bird, nothing to see here.

That was until I read the  Navy Times Story on Peter Mimms that detailed his financial and marriage problems. These were real problems and it seems he went through the chain of command for help. When he did not get the help he needed, he decided to hide out.

I asked myself who is to blame here? Certainly Peter Mimms could have handled this better. However, he went through the chain of command and didn’t get what he needed. What could his captain done to help him in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? Let me know what you think. travis@oscarmikeradio.com

Upcoming Event

I was on the Irreverent Warriors Boston Facebook Page when I saw this event.  I talked to one of the coordinators and will try to have him on next week to talk more about how breathing can help Veterans deal with PTSD, Anxiety, and other problems. This is free to Veterans and I am looking forward to learning more.

The Word

Marine Veteran and Raynham, MA Veteran Service Officer – Micaila Britto

I get the opportunity to guest host on Jack White’s, “South Shore News and Views” on WVBF AM 1530 in Taunton, MA from time to time. I get to come on with Jack, Bob and Murray to talk about events, happenings and issues in the South Shore Region of Massachusetts. South Shore News airs 12 – 2 PM each Wednesday. I had done the show with Bob because Jack and Murray were on assignment that week.

After the show I see Micaila Britto who has a show on WVBF AM 1530 called, “Ask a Veteran’s Agent”. Micaila is a Veteran’s Service Officer for the Town of Raynham. According to the Massachusetts Veteran’s Service Officers Website is, ….”to be the chief advocate for the nearly half-million veterans of the Commonwealth and their families. DVS establishes policy, proposes legislation, ensures that adequate funding for veterans’ programs is included in the Governor’s budget, and represents the interests of veterans in matters coming before the General Court.” She asked me to stay in the studio and talk with her.

All Veterans Service Officers must have served in the military. Micaila started working in Raynham 7 months ago and I was interested in talking with her about her experience and what she doing. Micaila and I also are members of the same Marine Corps League (http://www.mclmetrosouth1115.com/) so it was like talking with a friend than a radio guest. I learned a lot about what VSOs do and was encouraged, I use that term generously, to get my butt in gear and update my VA profile.

I am proud of the work Micaila is doing and hope to talk with her again in the future. Her motivation for her outreach and efforts come from a place of personal experience.

Episode 72 – Interview with Shaw’s Manager, Mr. Hurley

Episode 72 – Interview with Shaw’s Manager, Mr. Hurley

30 N Main St, Brockton, MA 02301

Saturday, December 23rd – 2017

Last year my producer, Keith Hayes of Sinista1 Productions and his lovely wife Dawn, put on the Ist Annual Gift of Giving Luncheon. They are doing it again this Saturday December 23rd at the Universal Missionary Church in Brockton, MA.

This was a great experience watching people in Brockton come out to support the church and the homeless. This year I was going to interview Keith and Dawn again, but he asked me instead to interview Dan Hurley who is the store manager for Shaw’s on Crescent Street in Brockton.

Keith asked me to talk to Dan because Shaw’s helped out with the Ist Annual Gift of Giving Luncheon. I went to the store and met with Dan and learned a lot about the retail grocery business. It is so cool to see the newly renovated Shaw’s.  Now it feels new and upscale but with everything I like which is great selection, friendly staff, and low prices.

Yours truly outside of Shaw’s – 715 Crescent St, Brockton, MA 02302

I really enjoyed getting to hear how Dan and his staff give back to the community. When Keith asked for help and explained what they were trying to do, Dan was excited to help out. I told him that seeing Shaw’s participate in this effort proved again that anyone can make a difference where they are. Also, it is great seeing companies help out in the local community.

This is not to say that other retail stores don’t help out. I am sure that they do, but it is good to know that when someone asks for help that a corporate citizen will assist however they can. It is good for the community, and it is a win for the company. Hearing how committed Shaw’s is to Brockton means that the 2nd Annual Gift of Giving Luncheon will be a success.

The podcast ended with me talking briefly about how powerful it is to help locally.

You can do so much for others and see it go to good use right away. There is still time to get involved with the 2nd Annual Gift of Giving Luncheon. You can check out their Facebook Page here -> https://www.facebook.com/events/522009784826607/.

Merry Christmas from Oscar Mike Radio, Sinista1 Productions and Whoobazoo. I hope to see you there this Saturday.

Episode 68 – South Shore News & Views

Episode 68 – South Shore News & Views

Jack (L) and Brian (R) talking about Veterans

November 8th, I was invited to come on the radio show South Shore News and Views on WVBF AM 1530 in Taunton, MA. SSN&V is hosted by Jack White, Bob Wisgirda, and Murray Vetstein. They had me on last year to do Oscar Mike Radio “Live” and it was an honor to be invited to come back on the show.

Joining me this was U.S. Navy Veteran Brian Hoffman. Brian served during the Vietnam war and had lived the post Vietnam experience. Currently is the Director for Corporate Relations for the The Children’s Museum in Easton (The Childrens Museum in Easton). It is always a pleasure to get to talk with another Veteran. Murray served in the U.S. Navy as well so this Marine felt right at home.

I learn a lot listening to older Veterans. Especially Vietnam Veterans who had a much different homecoming experience than Veterans do now. I feel it is important to get that perspective. Brian and Murray shared their views on the draft which were like mine.

Teamsters Local 653

Brian Hoffman had Brian McElhinney, Principal Office for Teamsters Local 653, (Teamsters Local 653 Website) call into to the show. We talked about how the Teamsters support Veterans hiring and other community outreach projects. So many times Unions seem to get nothing but negative press, so it was good to hear that a Veteran in Massachusetts could go to the Union after the military to look for work.

Brian Hoffman also thanked Brian McElhinney for the Teamsters support of Toys for Troops and the Children’s Museum in Easton. In both cases Teamsters Local 653 went above and beyond to help out with both efforts. It was good getting to learn about this.

Tim and Legend, Client Eastwood

In the second hour, Tim Montjoy from Operation Teammate called in to talk to us. Operation Teammate provides outings for children of military and first responders who are deployed. This allows Operation Teammate to craft events that provide mentorship opportunities to the children that attend these outings. Tim also talked about how the athletes are moved by the opportunity to show these children what hard work and dedication to education and sport can do for their future. To find out more, got to http://www.operationteammate.org/

This was my second year doing this with WVBF AM 1530 – South Shore New and Views. I love radio, and getting to be on with Jack, Bob, and Murray is a treat. South Shore News is one of many programs on WVBF AM 1530. You can get the complete list of shows and more information on http://www.hometowntalkradio.com/

See you all next year!
