Episode 92 – 21 Years a Folded Flag

I met with Richard Fitts Jr. and Rudy Childs on a cold April Sunday. Believe it or not it can get really cold and nasty during Spring in New England. We were meeting to talk about his documentary, “21 Years a Folded Flag”. Looking at the trailer got me interested in this story because I feel that Vietnam Veterans and Gold Star Family Members still get shut out compared to other wars and conflicts.

This documentary is about Richard Fitts Sr. who was a Green Beret in the Army. He lost his life in Laos on November 30th 1968 during a top secret, classified mission.

Richard was two years old at the time, and never got to know his father. Sitting there listening to him talk, I couldn’t imagine what that must have been like. It wasn’t until over 20 years later that the Fitts family got to find out what had happened to Richard Sr.

Richard wanted tell this story to keep his father’s memory alive. Rudy Childs started working on this film project and it became a labor of love. Richard and Rudy entered this film into a festival in Maryland and it almost won. They are proud of their work and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. Check out their fundraiser (Fund my story/”green beret father”), and consider donating to help get this story told.

Episode 90 – Sock Puppet Silliness

Welcome back! It is just me this week and so here is a show with traditional flow you all are used to on Oscar Mike Radio. Stand up, shuffle-up and walk to the door, it is time to JUMP!

Question of the Week

What is the Weekend Safety Brief? Simply put, the weekend safety brief will be a weekly YouTube Livestream. I need to get better in front of the camera, and this seemed a fun way to do it.

Episode 90!!

Episode 90 is here!!! This starts the official countdown to Episode 100! Time flies and I have been having fun ever since this started. One of the big things going forward that I can now announce is Oscar Mike Radio which as you all know is part of the Whoobazoo will now be streaming to Radio Massasoit.

Episode 88 with Sgt Megan was the very first episode, and I am excited that Oscar Mike Radio will be heard by a younger demographic.

The Word – Sock Puppet Silliness

Was this so heinous that it cost two people their careers?

Look at the image to your left. This is Master Sergeant Robin Brown (E-8) with the Tennessee Air National Guard. She was removed from her position at the Joint Public Affairs Office after this video hit critical mass on social media. I looked at this video and while I could argue that it wasn’t exactly, 100% military proper, based on the weight of the collars in the room it certainly wasn’t a moment that warranted the reaction by the brass. The brass being Major General Terry Haston who kicked out MSGT Brown, forced the retirement of the Colonel who presided over the ceremony. His main crime was he did not raise his right hand during the ceremony. Adam Weinstein, Senior Editor for Task and Purpose & Navy Veteran sums up how I feel with the following article. Everybody Involved In That Dino Puppet Reenlistment Video Just Got Fired .

People are getting upset for the wrong things…..

Episode 86 – In Memory of Sgt Littlewind

Episode 86 – In Memory of Sgt Littlewind

In Memory of Sgt. Rocky Littlewind USMC – May 12, 1989 – Oct. 23, 2016

This was a different kind of podcast. I got a message asking to talk to me about the organization America’s Run for the Fallen – Run for the Fallen. Jody Ranisate is the Lead Run Captain for Iowa. Her brother Rocky served in the Marine Corps. Rocky was deployed to Afghanistan and Okinawa. Jody loved her brother and was proud that he was a Marine. Rocky came home and had a long battle with PTSD.

Unfortunately, Rocky lost his battle with PTSD in 2016. This podcast is dedicated to his service and memory.

I have no idea what it would be like to lose a sibling or someone I know this way. When Jody and I started talking, I wanted to let her tell her story and talk about her outreach through America’s Run for the Fallen, but I wanted to be respectful. I had never done a podcast like this that was as personal and hurtful at the same time.

Jody and I got connected over Skype and once I had the sound right we just started talking. Sometimes people want to go right to their organization they represent and use the time to tell me what they do and how everyone can help. She took a different path for our conversation.
Jody talked about Rocky from a sister’s perspective. Many times you hear from the wife, mother or father about their loss, but not necessarily the siblings. As she talked to me, I got to know Rocky, not as a Sgt of Marines, but as a person, a brother who made people laugh and loved serving his country.

America’s Run for the Fallen was a way that Jody could give back and advocate for other people who have lost loved ones.

Episode 84 – Mistress Carrie Update Pt.1

Mistress Carrie – WAAF DJ – Update Part One

Mistress Carrie is a DJ for WAAF in Boston, MA. She came on Oscar Mike Radio for Episode 62. Click here for (OMR Episode 62 Link) for the podcast. We had talked about all the trolls who blew up over a picture of her and Senator Elizabeth Warren. The whole thing went way out of proportion and people were talking all kinds of crazy stuff about how Mistress Carrie didn’t care for Veterans. Well, suffice to say she went scorched earth on that idea!  At the end of the podcast she told me she was working on the top secret mission would update me later.

Fast forward to March, and we setup a time to talk again. Suffice to say she got a big welcome to life in the military! Hurry up and wait to go nowhere fast!!!

All kidding aside, when you understand what was required to get ready to go on this mission, to get the no go order at the last minute was a big let down to say the least. Listening her talk about what it took to go, much less execute, you can see that this wasn’t a publicity stunt. She genuinely cares about those who are in the military and veterans.

My question is I wonder what will be next for her?

The reason I am doing this as two parts is once we got done talking about her latest mission, the conversation kept going and, I didn’t want to cut it. So I will do the second part of the conversation in a couple weeks.

Question of the Week

How’s it going everyone? I will ask the question this week. The OMR logo has classic look that has been here since day one. I needed to update some things and my producer – Sinista1 a.k.a Keith Hayes asked me to try to use green/gold combination and see what happens. The image on the left is the idea for the new color scheme. The artists is going to incorporate some black, but this is direction I am looking at going.

What do you all think? If you want to sound off about this, let me know – travis@oscarmikeradio.com or on the Oscar Mike Radio Facebook Page

Introducing Megan Bruce

Like I said in my podcast, I was sipping on my Polar Mandarin Orange Seltzer when I saw this video hit my OMR Facebook Feed – [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nOynz3dcqQ[/embedyt] – I thought this was some comedienne trying to make a name for herself. I was wrong, and so it is with great pleasure that I want to introduce Megan Bruce, Marine Veteran and comedienne who has no problem going scorched earth on someone. I am hoping to have her on Oscar Mike Radio, but until then like the video and hit that subscribe button to stay in the know. OMR sends, you won’t be sorry. Check out the Megan Bruce Facebook Page.

The Word – Admiral Dewey

Dewey Square on a sunny summer day.

What do you know about Dewey Square? Most people will tell you that it was the site of Occupy Boston, and not give a second thought to it’s namesake. Did you know that Dewey Square by South Station in Boston was named after a Navy Legend? Admiral George Dewey is the only Naval Officer ever to receive the rank of Admiral of the Navy. Looking through Admiral Dewey’s career and realized I couldn’t cover everything in 30 minutes.

I wanted to raise awareness about a name that is associated with protesters who trashed Dewey Square. I know because everyday of the Occupy Boston Protest I walked by it twice a day.

Admiral Dewey was an American Hero. More than anything else, I want to find out more about other landmarks that are named after military veterans.

Love the shout out to the Marines!
