134 – Bill Moore – Project New Hope

LiveCast at Project New Hope

Bill reached out to me on Facebook Messenger about coming on Oscar Mike Radio. He asked me if I would come out and talk to him at his headquarters in Worcester, MA. I headed up on cold morning in February and found the office pretty easily.

I met Bill and said introduced myself. The first thing that stood out were all the coats and toys in his office. He explained that they were a donation from UNUM Insurance Company https://www.unum.com/ and would be given to children of Veterans in need.

Bill got a laugh out of me with some good natured ribbing about me being a Marine. I had learned about Bill’s Air Force Career and gained a massive amount of respect for what he did when he served.

We moved the conversation to how Bill got Project New Hope off the ground. There is this desire that Bill has to serve and be of service. Meeting the other volunteers who popped in and out to work the mission was one of the highlights of the day.

There is also a Project New Hope Office in Westfield, MA. By car is it 60 miles one way to Westfield. That is a lot of ground to cover for any non profit organization. Bill and his team are committed to Veterans and I was glad to make the trip to meet everyone. A big shout out to BOSE for supplying headphones to troops. Thanks for my pair Bill, they sounded great!

Project New Hope – Retreat

Bill talked about this upcoming retreat in March. This is an Alcohol and Drug Recovery Retreat designed to help Veterans struggling with addiction. Go to – https://www.projectnewhopema.org/retreat/alcohol-and-drug-recovery-retreat/ to find out more and register.

Episode 99 – Whoobazoo

Like I said in the podcast, this episode in a way is more exciting than 100. I feel like a did a couple of weeks ago when my vehicle turn the odometer over. It is waiting for the next mile or in the case episode to come that makes it better. So what does Whoobazoo have to do with Oscar Mike Radio? Everything – What you are hearing now, was just an idea over two years ago.  This episode is a small way I can say thanks and the best is yet to come.

I met Keith over two years ago at the first Dale Dorman Media Day at Massasoit Community College. He was doing a break out session on podcasting and at the time Oscar Mike Radio was an idea for a AM/FM Radio show, not a podcast. That meeting changed everything. Keith thought the idea had merit and gave me some homework.

Anthony Arnold

I worked on the idea and when I did the first couple of shows both Keith and Anthony pointed out areas for improvement and some good habits to implement for podcasting. This is the biggest difference with what Whoobazoo does versus other podcast services. Now when I listen to one of my first 30 episodes and listen to the last 30 I can hear their advice pay off.

Keith and Anthony were doing podcasts before podcasting was even a term. So what they shared with me was all their experience and passion for content creation that I wouldn’t get from watching a YouTube creator.

99 Episodes into Oscar Mike Radio, I look back to when this was an idea and look forward to what is next. I listen to how Keith works his show, The Booth, and how Whoobazoo has evolved.

There are more podcast artists coming on board everyday and I love hearing and seeing their creative efforts. Here is to the next 99. Thanks guys

Episode 88 – Sgt Megan

Episode 88 – Sgt Megan

Episode 88 – Marine Comedian Sgt Megan

About 6 weeks ago, I saw a video about a military dependent who was a stripper. She had gotten divorced from her Marine husband and had gone back home. The video was made by Megan Bruce. At first I thought she was a civilian trying something new, but I was wrong. Megan Bruce served in the Marine Corps, and wants to use comedy to tell stories about the military experience from a female point of view. I was curious because I haven’t seen anyone in the military, especially a female, do comedy like this. The video is laugh out loud funny, but also seemed empathetic to men who go through the divorce process, and lose access to their children.

I reached out to Megan and we started talking. Come to find out she has a long term plan for what she is trying to do.  These videos are funny, but  it is the way she gets into character that leads me to believe that the Sgt Megan brand can go somewhere.

I think both videos show her range and educate without being preachy/angry. The best part of seeing her videos was reading the comments. Most people didn’t pick up on the fact that the character was not real. Even when Megan said, hey I was just in character, people had difficulty accepting that this was an act.

We all could be watching something big happening. There is space in the comedy world for someone like Sgt Bruce. She is going to be on again soon and we will talk about other things she is working on for her comedy routine. Check out the videos below and be sure to hit the links to stay in the know. The Question of the Week

This is not so much a question, but answer. Since day one I have been asked about getting the show on ITunes or Google Play. It is already on SoundCloud.  The team at Whoobazoo.com made this happen for me, and listeners couldn’t be more happy.  I also have Oscar Mike Radio on Stitcher. You can access the shows from these links:

So listen, download, subscribe and be sure to tell your friends 😉

The Word – Toys for Tots

As I said, the more I do this the more I realize I don’t know. I had no idea that the Toys for Tots logo was made by Walt Disney. I had no idea that the Boston Area Toys for Tots did so much. Vinny, who is an older Marine, showed me around and was pretty proud of what they were doing. He should be. Many kids are getting toys this year because of work he and his team do.

It was cool seeing the Jack Daniels people working to sort toys.

They had been coming here for the last 5 years and had already committed to coming back in 2017. I enjoyed getting to talk to Mrs. Kay. I could have spent hours listening to her times in the Marine Corps.

I hope if you get a chance to support or volunteer for Toys for Tots nationwide that you will leap at the opportunity. This is an organization that has helped kids for over 60 years.

Unit Shout Out – Boston Bruins Fans

Since 1999 the Boston Bruins have been doing collections for Toys for Tots. I was told me that Boston Bruins fans are the most generous when it comes to supporting Toys for Tots. If you have ever taken in a Bruins game you know that it is not an inexpensive night out. Hats off to Bruins fans for supporting the Boston Toys for Tots drive with your generous donations.
