Happy New Year! I hope you are all ending 2020 safe and healthy. Even though COVID-19 changed some of my plans for Oscar Mike Radio, I thought about and I feel blessed as 2020 winds down. Just some thoughts around Christmas this year and what someone in the military may be going through. It can be a difficult time under the best of circumstances. I first saw Chad when I caught some of his videos talking about life in the cab of his pickup truck. Fast forward to today and Chad is world renowned comedian who approaches life through the lens of common sense and laughter.
Talking with me during a break from recording at his studio, Chad talked to me about how important it is to be able to laugh at oneself and poke fun where common sense is lacking.
Maybe it really is that simple. Being able to laugh and more importantly laugh with someone does more than a pill ever will. The only way to know for sure is to look for the funny side of life. Chad talks about being able to make fun of himself. I think if we all did that the world would be better for it.

Danielle Rocco is peer in Veterans’ Advocacy. She has been on Oscar Mike Radio as a guest, and we have co-hosted events together.
We had talked about doing a live interview event at the Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike in Milford, MA on December 2020. I was going to meet her son Jake who served in the Marine Corps and have him on Oscar Mike Radio. Well thanks to COVID-19, we couldn’t meet in person. We decided to do the show over Zoom and had a great time.
I wanted Jake to help me tell you all about how the holidays and Christmas can be while serving in the military. Jake and I served in different times and eras in the Marine Corps, but we had similar experiences with regards to being away from family for the holidays. It was great getting to hear about his experiences, and share that bond the Marines have. I think watching Danielle listening to us talk was a real bonus for this show. Also, it was great to hear her talk like a mom about being a peace with her son serving.

BBQ is something that brings out a passion in people regardless of their background. It is a religion, and the newest preacher is USAF Veteran Mike Starr.
Mike has been around BBQ all his life and really came into his own when he was the “Squadron Pitmaster” for his US Air Force Unit. Being in the military, allowed Mike to taste BBQ all over the world. I am jealous.
Blazing Starr BBQ launched this year. That’s right, COVID-19 and a global economic fallout did not stop Mike from launching his company. He saw it as a way to get established as people’s habits changed due to COVID-19.
There are a lot of lessons one can learn from Blazing Star BBQ. The main theme for me is believing in yourself and your product. Then working to make it the best you possibly can while adapting to an ever changing business climate. I am looking forward to talking with Mike in the future as his business grows.
