Episode 40 – A Millenial’s Perspective

Episode 40 – A Millenial’s Perspective

This is episode 40. In many ways it was challenging and rewarding at the same time.

A couple of things for this week’s episode.

First, I want to thank Kip Clark from the Podcast Stride and Saunter for coming on Oscar Mike Radio. You can check his podcast here —http://www.strideandsaunter.com/ Kip has produced almost 150 episodes, which is to say he has talked to many people about various subjects. We met at the PRX Podcast Garage Meetup, and started talking about content creation and ideas. Kip had me come on his podcast Stride and Saunter – Episode 137. I found a person was truly interested in my experiences and I was interested in collaborating further. I like Kip’s enthusiasm in perfecting his craft and I like how he connects with his guests.

Second, as you can tell this was not recorded in an area meant for recording audio. I wanted to try something new and different so we recorded this at JJ’s Caffe in Brockton, MA. JJ’s Caffe Website . As a bonus, JJ’s Caffe picked up a new fan. Check them out, you won’t be sorry. I want to thank everyone at JJ’s for being great hosts.

I was completely out of my comfort zone recording and editing. I had to put a lot of effort into this episode to get it to sound the way it does. Is there ambient noise in the background? Sure, but I am happy with how this episode forced me to grow technically. It was noisy and chaotic and I credit Kip for handling all the external distractions with a cool demeanor. It made for a great conversation, and I hope you enjoy this episode.

Third, it is easy for me as guy my age to think younger people are out of touch, but as you will hear there are younger people who want to take the time to understand the larger world around them. Kip shows all of us that if we are willing to have conversation and truly listen, we can learn from each other.

Thanks again Kip, I can’t wait to talk with you again

South Shore News and Views – Wild Hearts Horses for Heroes

South Shore News and Views – Wild Hearts Horses for Heroes

I had the privilege of being able to guest host last Wednesday on South Shore News and Views. The program airs on WVBF AM 1530. SSN&Vs is hosted by Jack White, Murray Vetstein and Bob Wisgirda.  You could say this program is where I got my real start in radio. I got to see how a program is set up start to finish, and learn some of the important tasks that go into making a radio show work.

Jack White, Julie Lovely, and Murray Vetstein – April 19th 2017

South Shore News and Views airs every Wednesday from 1-3 PM. You can also listen to this program on the Tune-In App on your phone or listen on your computer by going to http://www.hometowntalkradio.com/ and clicking dog to listen live. If you want to find out what is going on around the South Shore, this is the place to be. They love it when people call in to the show. The number is (508) 822-1106.

Wednesday, April 19th Julie Lovely came on the show and talked about the program she runs to help combat veteran suicide.

I was interested to hear about her work and how Horses for Heroes helped veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI. It is heart wrenching going to funerals for brothers and sisters who feel that there is no other option.

Julie talked about the program, how it got started, and how horses are well suited to help veterans. I was drawn into how she started with an idea to help someone and now it is something that changing lives. Julie wasn’t there to pat herself on the back, but to tell us how a horse can help someone who is suffering on the inside. I was hooked. WVBF and South Shore News and Views cares about our military and veterans, and I was glad to be a part of this show. Julie closed out the show by talking about the upcoming benefit dinner on May 20th. I will have the link below.  Please check out the website and social media links below.

Episode 39 – The Fighting Sullivans

Episode 39 – The Fighting Sullivans

Question of the Week

I was asked about Syria and what President Trump did. Well, the truth is I am still trying to figure out where the “red line” is that President Obama talked about. In short, I need to educate myself on what is actually going on. I will say that NOT putting troops on the ground was a good thing. When I feel like I can talk about it without recycling mainstream media, I will do a podcast on it.

The Word

This all got started when I watched the 1944 black and white movie, The Fighting Sullivans. It was a true story about five brothers who were all killed at the same time in WWII. They were serving on the USS Juneau and the ship went down around November 13th 1942.

If you can watch the movie on Netflix or Tuner Classic Movies you should. One thing that struck me was how different America was almost 100 years ago. Mothers stayed home with the children, and Dad could work at one place for many years. Family dynamics, dating and opportunities were very different. Probably not in a bad way…..

The Sullivan Brothers petitioned the Navy to all serve together. The Navy had policy that did not allow that, but it was not actively enforced. So ranging from 20 – 27 years of age, all the brothers went to basic training and served on the USS Juneau. It is my understanding that the movie captured the spirit of the Sullivan family during this time.

November 13th, the Juneau was hit by Japanese and sank. I think the chilling line from that movie as, “All Five”.

I can’t imagine losing one of my sons, much less all of them at one time. As a result of this the DoD instituted the Sole Survivor Policy, which was put into law into 1948. When I hear the words, “All gave some, and some gave all.” I will never think of it as a catch phrase. The Sullivan family’s destiny was changed forever. I don’t know if I could give any of my sons, much less all of them. This was an old movie, but it hit home for me.

The Complaint Department

POG is worried that there are no Air Force movies coming out. He has a point. Not since Iron Eagle have there been any good Air Force flicks….. You would think with the F22 Raptor costing more than a summer blockbuster that they would get busy.

Unit Shout Out

I got this from Fox News. Christopher Garza was arrested for doing nearly 160 MPH in his Dodge Challenger Hellcat. His car was impounded, he was put in jail and now he  is out on bail. He says he has no regrets because he was giving a wounded vet a fast ride to cheer him up. Now of course I would never tell anyone to break the law, but it is special kind of friend who will do this and say that he has no regrets. Chris, I don’t know you, but  I do that Vet will never forget that nig

Upcoming Events

In Honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month the Manchester Vet Center is Proud to Present THE INVISIBLE WAR

From Oscar-and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick comes this investigative documentary about the epidemic of rape of soldiers within the US military. Profoundly moving, the film follows the stories of several idealistic young service members who were raped and then betrayed by their own officers when they came forward to report.

Episode 38 – Vomiting Professor from Drexel University

Episode 38 – Vomiting Professor from Drexel University

Question of the Week

I was asked about my sound. People have been asking about my sound and why I sound different. Simply put, I invested in some equipment this year. I got a ZoomH6. Check it out here – ZoomH6 Webpage. This unit has changed the way I record and has space for me to grow as a content producer.

The ZoomH6 is modular, meaning I can easily attach different microphones for the situation. I can fit in a backpack or briefcase which allows me to be where the story is, or in a recording studio.

I turned in bottles and cans, scrimped and saved to get a recertified ZoomH6 off Ebay. I am glad I did. I am still learning how to use it, and I am looking forward to seeing what I can do with it.

The Word

I talked about the professor from Drexel who tweeted that he wanted to vomit when he saw someone give a soldier their first class airline seat. So much has been written and said about this already, but I was add this thought.

The next time you, as an active duty service member or veteran have someone thank you for their service, smile and say you are welcome. The reason I say this is there are still people that would spit or in this case vomit on you for wearing your uniform if they could.

Professor Ciccariello-Maher may not have physically done that to the soldier, but in a real sense he did it with his tweet. It is his right to do. I am going to ask that if you say you support the military that you think long and hard before going to Drexel University where he teaches. I am going to write a letter to Drexel expressing my thoughts in a meaningful way. I also want to thank the person who gave up their seat for that soldier. This attention should be on you.

Episode 37 – War Memorial Foundation

Episode 37 – War Memorial Foundation

Question of the Week

The Question of the Week for Episode 37 comes from Craig P in Brockton, MA. He said, “Michelle Dubois compares stress of being illegal to PTSD! Talk about disrespecting veterans who suffer from a real issue. What do you think of that?” Michelle Dubois went on record to warn illegal aliens about ICE raids and was criticized for it. Craig, I hope I answered your question. This politician has no idea what she is talking about.

The Word

Steven Jones from the War Memorial Foundation asked me to pass this message along in Episode 37. I am working to get him on the show.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I hope this finds you and yours well. We here at the War Memorial Foundation Inc. appeal to your sense of patriotism one more time. We have recently embarked on a new fund raising campaign to make the two proposed War Monuments a reality. Remember, these same war monuments were turned down by Americas Home Town Plymouth. Now for the state of Massachusetts to show resistance or indifference would be even more tragic. So if you could please in your spare time using any and all media at your disposal to help promote, fund and pass along this information. The men and women who proudly served in the last four wars are hoping that you do so. I do this not for me but for us and most certainly them. Thank you for time and efforts toward this honorable endeavor. Sincerely, Steven J. Jones and the War Memorial Foundation Inc.’
